Touring Southern Maine

Staying at the Gull, you are within easy reach of more than just old Orchard Beach. There are several scenic drives and many options when you are ready to take a break from the beach. Just a couple of miles away you will find championship golf and fabulous mini-golf is just steps from The Gull.

Casco Bay LinesThe Route One corridor just west of town is a beehive of activity with two water parks, an amusement park, movie theatres, restaurants and shops.

Twelve miles north of The Gull is Portland where you can browse the popular Maine Mall or tour the historic Old Port, with its cobblestone streets lined with boutique shops and some of Maine’s best restaurants along Portland Harbor. Casco Bay Ferries are a great way to explore the harbor and outlying islands. Portland is also home to Maine’s oldest lighthouse, Portland Head light was first commissioned by George Washington.

Pine PointThe Gull is less than a mile to the historic old world resort community of Ocean Park. This is a must visit if you long for an old fashioned soda fountain and a community that has resisted modern change.

We are just 5 to 10 minutes from the neighboring seaside communities of Camp Ellis and Pine Point where you can experience a quieter Maine coastal setting. Visit Camp Ellis to see an authentic working fishing village, you can even explore the jetties and tidal rivers and drop a hook to fish for striped bass yourself. If you want to commune with nature, then you can kayak or canoe Maine’s largest scenic salt water marsh, Scarborough Marsh is just a short drive away with plentiful wildlife and birds that you can see from water level in your own boat or with a guided nature walk.

LighthouseJust a short drive from the Gull, you can visit lighthouses in Biddeford Pool (Woods Island Light) and Goat Island Light in Cape Porpoise of Kennebunkport. In the famed town of Kennebunkport, you will want to browse the chic boutiques of Dock Square then drive Ocean Avenue by seaside mansions and the summer white home of our 41st President, George Bush. Further south on your drive are the popular seaside towns of Wells and Ogunquit which is famous for its art community and summer playhouse.

The cities of Biddeford and Saco are our immediate neighbors, offering a variety of services and shopping including The Shops at Biddeford with popular name brand chain stores, and Cabela’s World Outfitters store is in Scarborough.

Less than 30 minutes north is the bustling factory outlet town of Freeport, home of the famous L.L. Bean store, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Old Orchard Beach offers more than you can do in week, but you can also come to The Gull and do nothing at all – just watch the gulls glide along the beach and relax by our outdoor heated pool.

Be sure to visit our Things-To-Do and Calendar of Events sections to help acquaint yourself with what is going on during your visit.
